History of a collection
In 1739, Anna Maria Luisa de Medici, the family’s last descendant, bequeathed the family’s collections to the Tuscan state, on condition that they never leave Florence. In this way, the Medici collections became public. Thanks to this avant-garde and visionary woman, we still have access to this great heritage. Paintings, sculptures, silverware, jewellery, ceramics, costumes, tapestries – it’s a journey from the Middle Ages to the full Renaissance, right through to the Baroque and modern periods.
